Soul Magic – by David McLaughlan

LOVE, ME.

I’m probably going to sound like a terrible snoop. Hey, it comes with being a parent!

I know my daughter’s school timetable is on the computer because I put it there. Today I needed to know the time of one of her classes but I couldn’t find it. So I wondered if she had moved it into her folder. I clicked and looked.

Inside was a document addressed, “To Me.” The timetable wasn’t there. I would just have to phone the school. Now, this was the point where I should have backed out gracefully. But I’m glad I didn’t!

In a lovely cursive script she had written a letter to her future self. In it she described how she would like her life to turn out. She described the kind of house she would like to live in and listed a selection of cities she would like that house to be in. There was a husband there, a chosen profession and a selection of children and pets – all already named!

After the list came the suggestion to, “Check back in 15 – 20 years and see how it all turns out. (She was ten when she wrote it.)

Signing off she told herself, “I believe you can do it. Love. x.”

That last line stayed with me as I closed the computer down. Believing in yourself is one of the keys to success in this life. Loving yourself (in an unselfish kind of way) is another.

Now I’m intrigued.

I’m gonna make sure that letter gets backed up along with all the other documents I want to keep safe. And I think I might just check back in 15 – 20 years myself.
