Soul Magic

THE OLD
by Nancy Leslie
I decided to take the opportunity to drive my old friend and
see how it was doing. Glad I did.
They have commenced demolition on a much grander scale. The
equipment was still on site, and instead of a building in partial
deconstruction, I found a twisted mass of wood and metal awkwardly resting on a
less than firm looking foundation.
Naturally, in my heels and purple dress pants, I felt the need to
get a closer look. I parked the car and walked around what used to be one of my
favorite photo subjects and watched as the guard cat retreated in my presence.
The mass creaked and cracked as I wandered around at a safe
distance as if to say its last goodbye before the crews did the final
demolition and any remnants of the building that once was would be gone.
Of course, I grabbed a few more "souvenirs", some
wood scraps, rusted iron pieces and an electrical insulator that once appeared
to be mounted to the side of the huge structure, now unceremoniously laying in
a pile of rubble with broken glass and small splinters of wood and metal.
The mill was gone, like many landmarks have passed, but I
was fortunate enough to have gotten to see it with still a shred of dignity and
capture some of its one time beauty.
I’m glad I went to see my old friend before it died
completely into oblivion. Now I have only my photos to remember its majesty.
